FREDERICK, Md. -- A $2,000 painting stolen from an exhibit in December has been returned, according to Frederick police.

An unidentified man contacted them Tuesday to say he had the missing painting, officers said. He brought the painting to police and it was confirmed to be "Rocky Road Covered Bridge" by local artist Carol Hutson.

The painting was stolen from the Frederick Arts Council Dec. 16 or 17.

The man is not believed to have been involved in the theft, police said. The painting was returned to Hutson, and police have reopened the investigation into the theft.
