Kid Cop Tells Drivers to “Respect the Bus” in PSA

A seventh-grader with lots of plans for his future, including being CEO of his own car company, is helping raise awareness about passing school buses illegally.

Tumbikani Mtika of Parkland Magnet Middle School stars as the kid cop in Montgomery County Public Schools’ public service announcement “The Short Arm of the Law” telling drivers to "play it smart, play it safe and respect the bus."

“It is a very serious subject, but when you look at our kid cop in action, it makes you realize how selfish we are,” Montgomery County Police Capt. Thomas Didone said.

Last year Maryland passed a law allowing cameras on school buses to snap shots of people who don’t stop. Montgomery County has added 25 cameras.

“We’ve had over 700 violations in the first eight months of the program, and that’s way too many,” Didone said.

Those caught passing stopped buses get a $125 citation in the mail.
