Overgrown Trees Can Hide D.C. Street Signs

D.C.’s streets are lined by 140,000 trees, but as beautiful as they are, they can be a problem.

Overgrowth can obscure street signs, which can be dangerous.

City officials want residents’ help telling them where stop signs are obscured.

“It's an ongoing problem since the trees are constantly growing,” said Earl Eutsler of DDOT Urban Forestry.

Eutsler helps keep track of 18 arborists and other DDOT employees, who try to stay ahead of the overgrowth.

Drivers and neighbors can report dangerous situations online here or by calling 311.

DDOT gets about 15,000 service calls a year, about one third of them involving trees.
