More than 70 vehicle models have made the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's 2015 list of the safest cars on the road.
Despite tougher standards, 33 vehicles earned the agency's top safety rating of Top Safety Pick +; the remaining vehicles on the list were selected as a Top Safety Pick.
There were only 39 vehicles on the list last year; this year's list features 71.
Asian manufacturers, specifically Toyota, Honda and Subaru, dominated the list.
The IIHS says the 2015 Top Safety Pick designation was awarded to vehicles that earned a "good or acceptable rating in the challenging small overlap front test and a good rating in each of the Institute's four other crashworthiness evaluations."
The Top Safety Pick+ award was given to vehicles that met those criteria and also featured an available front crash prevention system.
