Opening Day on I-95

VDOT adds a new lane in Northern Virginia

It's the holiday gift that keeps giving. VDOT is trying to ease the crunch on commuters by widening I-95 in Northern Virginia.

Crews have finished the first phase of widening the highway. Monday night, crews opened an additional northbound lane that runs from Lorton Road to the Fairfax County Parkway. And starting today, the improvements stretch from the Route 1 on-ramp to the Parkway.

These changes won't eliminate all the hassles of a Washington commute, but they do mean you'll have an extra travel lane all the way to the Springfield interchange. VDOT says it could save you as much as five to 10 minutes each day. The ripple effect could be noticed all the way down in Dale City.

Eventually, drivers will get an extra southbound lane, too. It's supposed to open next fall.
