Open Prayer Now Allowed at Public Meetings

Frederick County Board Votes Yes to Prayer at Meetings

You will now hear an opening prayer at public meetings in Frederick County, Md.

The county’s commissioners voted 3-to-2 yesterday to allow religious leaders to deliver “divine guidance” at their meetings.

The leaders must be ordained and have a congregation in Frederick County, and their prayers must avoid references to any particular religion, denomination or sect.

One commissioner opposed the policy because it prohibits prayers that mention specific deities.   Another commissioner wanted a moment of silence instead.
