Long-Time Capitol Hill Worker Killed in Head-On Crash

A long-time Capitol Hill worker and Maryland resident was struck and killed by a possible drunk driver in a head-on crash Monday night.

The crash was reported just after 8:30 p.m. in the 400 block of Central Avenue West near Brick Church Road in Davidsonville.

Marie Higgs, 60, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are investigating whether the 22-year-old driver, who crashed into Higgs and was later pronounced dead, had been drinking and driving.

News4 interviewed Higgs two years ago, when she lost her keys at Maryland Live! Casino. To protect herself and her home, she immediately called OnStar inside her car and police arrested the man who took her keys right on the spot. Police had called her actions "quick-thinking."

John Colarusso held back tears as he talked about his beloved aunt.

"Not fair. It's a kick in the gut. Someone as big-hearted as she is to go so suddenly is just... not fair."

Police have not yet identified the 22-year-old involved in the crash.
