Police: Man Opened Fire at Party Near University of Maryland; 1 Dead, 1 Hurt

One man has died and another is hurt after a shooting at a party early Sunday near the University of Maryland, College Park, police say.

Rogelio Sierra-Duran died after he was shot at the party in an apartment on the 9300 block of Cherry Hill Road, north of the university's campus, Prince George's County police said. He was 24.

Davie Serpas, 21, was taken into police custody in D.C. early Monday and charged with murder.

At least resident of the apartment where the shooting occurred is a student of the university, multiple sources told News4. No students were hurt.

Police say Serpas, Sierra-Duran and a third man argued at the party, and Serpas opened fire.

Police were called to the apartment, which is near an IKEA store, about 5:25 a.m.

Sierra-Duran was taken to a hospital, where he died. Another man, who police did not name, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Serpas is in police custody in D.C. and is awaiting extradition to Prince George's County.

The apartment complex where the shooting occurred is popular with college students. Many students said they were stunned by the crime. On Monday, crime tape still hung outside the building.

University of Maryland administrators said they did not warn students about the crime because it occurred too far from campus.
