Officials with Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred around 11 p.m. on Monday. Police say the incident occurred at southbound Branch Avenue, just south of Woodyard road in Clinton.

According to police, a driver lost control, crossed several lanes of traffic, and struck several other vehicles before veering off the road and colliding with trees. The driver of the striking vehicle was later identified as 23-year-old Jason Antwan Patten of Clinton, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Speed is being investigated as a factor. The investigation closed the southbound lanes of Branch Avenue at Woodyard Road for several hours.
