Official: Soccer Stadium Could Be Up to Next Mayor

D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson says the next mayor will play a "pivotal role'' in whether the city moves forward with a deal to build a new soccer stadium for D.C. United.

Finalizing the stadium deal is one of Democratic Mayor Vincent Gray's top priorities for his final seven months in office. Councilmember Muriel Bowser defeated Gray in the April Democratic primary, and she faces independent Councilmember David Catania in the November general election.

Gray's administration has proposed securing the land for the stadium through a complex series of swaps. Bowser and Catania are among those who've expressed concerns over the proposal.

Mendelson says it's unlikely the council will vote on the measure before the fall, which means the next mayor could have the final say over the stadium deal.
