The deputy mayor overseeing the District of Columbia fire department said a rookie firefighter was properly trained despite his claim that he didn't know what to do when people came to his fire station seeking help for someone nearby.
Medric Cecil Mills Jr., 77, died last month after he went into cardiac arrest across the street from the station. An investigation by the city found that at least two people went to the fire station and asked for help, and five firefighters inside were aware that someone needed assistance.
But none went to help Mills.
The cadet told internal investigators that he hadn't been trained how to respond when someone approaches the station seeking help. But deputy mayor Paul Quander said the firefighter should have known he could have responded.
