Officer Who Shot Dog Goes on Trial

An police officer will get a chance to give his account of what happened to Bear-Bear.

Keith Shepherd, 32, goes to trial Friday. He is charged with animal cruelty and a weapons charge after shooting a Siberian Husky, known as Bear-Bear.

The incident happened last summer at a dog park in Severn, Md. It prompted outrage from animal lovers.

Shepherd claims it was self-defense. He said he shot the dog while off duty in order to protect himself, his wife and their dog after the unleashed husky put its jaws around his dog's neck and the husky's owners didn't respond to his requests to control their dog.

A judge will decide the case.
