Officer Shoots, Seriously Injures D.C. Man

A 27-year-old man was shot and seriously injured by a special police officer, after trying to get into a Northeast D.C. apartment building Friday.

Officials say the incident unfolded in the 3700 block of Hayes Street NE at the Mayfair Mansions Apartment Complex.

A special police officer -- not affiliated with MPD but allowed to carry a weapon -- noticed a man trying to get into an apartment without a key.

The man's aunt told News4 the man was trying to visit his grandmother. She said he had previously been barred from entering the building, but his restriction was lifted. She described her nephew as bipolar, but not violent.

"When he realized he couldn't get to my mom, he went back home. The police should not have chased him. He never did anything."

It is unclear if the victim gave chase or how the events unfolded, but officials say the special officer shot the victim. He was transported to a local hospital and is said to be in serious condition.

D.C. Police are investigating the incident.
