Officer, I'm Not Texting … I'm Dialing!

iPhone fan, others worry about Md. text ban idea

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- A Maryland legislator is worried that a ban on texting while driving would prohibit him from using his touchscreen iPhone to make calls from his car.

Montgomery County Delegate Saqib Ali told a panel of his colleagues Tuesday that he uses his iPhone all the time and that he's worried tapping the touch screen to place the calls would run afoul of Howard County Delegate Frank Turner's proposed ban on writing, sending or reading a text message while operating a motor vehicle.

Turner's bill doesn't target talking on the phone.

Ali wonders how a police officer would know he was dialing his phone and not texting while driving.

Turner said he's willing to consider amendments to the measure.
