Northern Virginia Woman Watches State of the Union From First Lady's Box

Air Force officer first to have same-sex partner participate in military ceremony since DADT

A McLean, Va., woman was among the first lady’s guests during Tuesday night's State of the Union address.

Air Force Col. Ginger Wallace sat in Michelle Obama's box while the president spoke.

Wallace's partner of 10 years took part in the "pinning on" of her rank during her promotion ceremony in December -- the first time a gay or lesbian partner took part in a military promotion ceremony since the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell.

Wallace, an intelligence officer, is scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan in the spring to help build better relationships between the U.S. and Afghan people.
