Hot Water to Be Shut Down at Howard University

Students and faculty living on the campus of Howard University will be without hot water this weekend, as the school's facilities management works to repair equipment.

Starting Friday, Sept. 21 at 5 p.m., the university will shut off the hot water that the main campuses' temporary boiler uses to produce steam to ensure that the repairs to a steam pipe fracture do not cause disruptions to other campus operations.

Hot water is scheduled to be restored by 5 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 24, according to Howard's Physical Facilities Management office.

"The teams will be working around the clock to restore steam pressure as quickly as possible," the facilities management office wrote in an email to the Howard community. "The steam plant is scheduled to undergo complete modernization starting this academic year."

Hot water and dining services will be available at the school's Blackburn Dining Hall, while the Bethune Annex Cafeteria will close.

The hot water outage will not affect the start of classes, a university representative said.

The hot water shutdown comes as the university celebrates the beginning of the academic year Friday with NBC anchor Lester Holt delivering the keynote address during the 151st Opening Convocation ceremonies.

Howard previously postponed the start of classes for a week in January when the campus suffered a series of heating system failures and pipe ruptures.
