New Names Suggested for JEB Stuart High School

Fairfax County, Virginia, residents voted to rename a high school that was named after a Confederate general.

J.E.B. Stuart High School will get a new name after the school board voted in July to change it. A list of about 70 names were presented for people in the school’s area to cast their vote on the new name.

People could choose their first, second, and third choices, and each voted as weighted, meaning first choice was worth 3 points, second choice worth 2 points and third choice getting 1 point.

Top choices included Stuart, variations on Justice Thurgood Marshall, Barbara Rose Johns, and Peace Valley.

The school’s superintendent will make a recommendation to the school board, which will be posted on the school system’s website on Sept. 21. A final vote is scheduled for Oct. 26.

Once the new name is official, they have until the 2019-20 school year to make the change. Colors and a new mascot will be discussed after the name is official.
