WASHINGTON -- A new baby is hogging the attention at the National Zoo.

A western lowland gorilla was born to 26-year-old Mandara over the weekend. Baraka, 16, fathered the gorilla.

The species is critically endangered due to poaching and habitat loss and fragmentation.

It was the seventh successful gorilla birth for the zoo since 1991 and the sixth offspring for Mandala.

It is unknown yet if the baby is male or female, but the zoo might hold a contest to name the primate.
