National Science Foundation Moving to Alexandria

NSF will leave Arlington HQ in 2017

The National Science Foundation is moving its headquarters -- and more than 2,000 jobs -- from one northern Virginia suburb to another.

The General Services Administration announced Friday that NSF headquarters will move in 2017 from the Ballston section of Arlington to Alexandria, near the Eisenhower Avenue Metro station.

The move will occur after construction is completed on the new Hoffman Town Center complex.

Alexandria officials estimate that the move brings 2,400 NSF jobs plus another 1,800 permanent affiliated jobs, and 800 construction jobs. They estimate that the city's workforce will increase 4.5 percent as a result.

The GSA estimates it will save $65 million over the course of the 15-year lease.
