Mother Stabs Infant at Social Services Building

Mother in custody; child in stable condition

A mother stabbed her infant daughter in the face and neck at a social services building, according to Baltimore police.

The 8-month-old baby is listed in stable condition at Johns Hopkins Children's Center. The mother is in custody and was taken for a mental health evaluation.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the stabbing occurred just before 10 a.m. Tuesday at a Department of Social Services building, a two-story brick building in a neighborhood of row houses.

Police department spokesman Detective Donny Moses said the woman used a long kitchen knife in the stabbing and that the woman, baby and a social worker were in a room together when it occurred. Moses said the woman became irate before the stabbing, but he didn't know why.

The building does have metal detectors.
