Slain Morgan State University Student Had Hoped to Become DC Police Officer

What to Know

  • Marcus Edwards was studying social work and hoped to become a D.C. police officer.

A Morgan State University student from D.C. was stabbed to death off campus in Baltimore Monday night, police said.

Someone stabbed 21-year-old Marcus Edwards in the chest about a mile north of campus about 10:30 p.m.

Nicole Ausberry Brooks, Edwards' mother, said her son's wallet and cellphone were still on him after the attack. Police are investigating potential motives.

Edwards was studying social work at the university and had hoped to become a D.C. police officer. He was a former member of the Metropolitan Police Department Junior Police Academy.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help his family with expenses.

The GoFundMe shared more details about Edwards: "Marcus was a graduate of Cesar Chavez Public Charter Schools For Public Policy - Capitol Hill Campus in Washington, DC, a former intern of the Jr. Police Academy in DC and the U.S. Department of Treasury. He also worked at Chipotle and was a proud student of Social Work at Morgan State University. He, most definitely, had plans to become a DC Police Officer. He wore the costume for "McGruff the Crime Dog", just last month, for National Night Out in the Second Police District, a place that felt like home for him, because of the amount of time he spent there as a volunteer. Police officers shared the news today, in total devastation."
