County officials in Maryland have settled a civil rights violation claim with the family of a man who died after being shot by a Taser during a 2013 arrest.
Montgomery County's chief of litigation told The Baltimore Sun Thursday that the settlement, done by Anthony Howard Sr.'s family, was made without any admission of liability.
The Gaithersburg man was high on cocaine and behaving erratically when he encountered police in April 2013.
Police told News4's Darcy Spencer in 2013 that Howard eventually picked up a child's scooter and threw it at the door. When he allegedly refused to obey police commands to leave the porch of the house, the two officers used their Tasers.
The Sun reports police fired their Tasers at the 51-year-old nine times for a total of 37 seconds, longer than the recommended limit of 15 seconds. He stopped breathing and died shortly after.
Officials cited a confidentiality agreement in declining to disclose the settlement amount.
