An investigation into how a teenager drowned at a community pool in Rockville. Police believe the 15-year-old and his friends may have jumped a fence to get into the pool inside a housing complex. News4's Derrick Ward spoke to the victim's family and has more on the investigation.
A 15-year-old drowned after he and friends broke into a closed Montgomery County pool for a swim Saturday night.
Police said Hafis Kareem of the 700 block of Monroe Street in Rockville entered the community pool, in the New Mark Commons area of Rockville, after it was closed.
At some point, Kareem failed to surface. His friends called out to a passer-by, who called 911.
Those friends left the pool before rescuers arrived, police said.
The incident was originally described as a near-drowning. Arriving officers located the victim and started CPR before Fire Rescue arrived; Kareem was then taken to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital where additional life-saving efforts were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead.
Detectives are investigating the case. Anyone with information about it should call the county's major crimes division at 240-773-5070.
