Monitoring BRAC Deadlines and Gridlock

Thursday is the deadline for all BRAC recommendations to go into effect, but concerns about paralyzing gridlock don't seem to be playing out on the area's roadways.

The new Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on the campus of the Bethesda Naval Hospital has been moving workers in gradually. Thursday morning, traffic along Wisconsin Avenue was normal.

At Fort Belvoir in Virginia, the 20,000 relocated workers are already in place -- no significant problems have been reported.

In Alexandria, there are still lingering concerns about the move to the Mark Center. Located in one of the area's most congested corridors, the facility does not have easy Metro access.

More than 2,000 workers have moved into the Mark Center already and another 2,500 will move in over the next year.
