Minimum Wage in DC Jumps to $11.50 Per Hour

Many people in our region who work for minimum wage are about to see a boost in their paychecks.

The D.C. minimum wage increased by a dollar on Friday, from $10.50 to $11.50 per hour.

In Maryland, the minimum wage jumped by $0.50 per hour, from $8.25 to $8.75. And Montgomery County workers got a $1.20 boost, from $9.55 to $10.75 per hour.

The minimum wage increase in D.C. is the latest bump scheduled to take effect since D.C. legislators signed a law into effect in January 2014.

On Tuesday, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser signed into a law a bill that will raise the city's wage to $15 an hour, starting in 2020.

President Barack Obama praised Bowser and D.C. for raising the wage.

"No American working full-time in this country should struggle to make ends meet," he said in a statement posted to the White House Twitter account.
