A student is facing an assault charge after shooting a classmate with a toy gun at Briggs Chaney Middle School in Silver Spring, school officials said.

The incident happened around 9 a.m. at the campus on Rainbow Drive.

Initial reports said the weapon was a BB gun. However, officials now say it was a gun that shoots plastic pellets.

The shooting victim was not injured, officials said. Classes have continued as scheduled, and the school has not been placed on lockdown.
