Miami-D.C. Flight Diverted to South Carolina

American Airlines Flight 734 from Miami to Reagan National Airport landed in Charleston after  encountering what an airport official called severe turbulence.

Becky Beaman of the Charleston County Aviation Authority said the plane carrying 152 passengers and a crew of six landed in Charleston shortly before 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Flight 734 encountered severe turbulence near the Florida-Georgia border, American Airlines spokesman Tim Smith said. Emergency medical crews met the plane, Smith said. One flight attendant and two passengers were treated for minor injuries.

The plane made a normal landing, Smith said, and mechanics will check out the aircraft for any damage.

A replacement plane was being flown to Charleston so the passengers can continue their flight Tuesday evening. They are expected to arrive about 8 p.m.
