An off-duty Metrobus ran down a female jogger Thursday morning in northwest Washington.

The bus driver was headed back to a bus garage at about 8:30 a.m. when it struck Amanda Mahnke in the east crosswalk on Connecticut Avenue crossing Florida Avenue.

Sources said that cameras on the bus were not working and that the recording device from the bus was missing.

Police will check a nearby crime camera to see if it captured the incident.

Mahnke, 30, of Northwest, was transported to George Washington University Hospital with life-threatening injuries.  She is listed in critical but stable condition.

Mahnke had no identification on her when she was injured, so police asked the public for help identifying her. She works as communications director for U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen, D-Wash., NBC4 learned Thursday evening.

"Amanda is more than a co-worker or employee; she is a great friend and confidant to many," Larsen said in a statement.  "As her friends, we know the best thing we can do for her and her family is to keep her in our thoughts and prayers."

The driver, who has been driving for Metro since 2000, is being questioned and will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
