Metro to Open Early for Marine Corps Marathon

Metro opens 6 a.m. on Oct. 28 for the 43rd Marine Corps Marathon

Metro will open two hours early on Oct. 28 to help transport thousands of runners and spectators to the starting line of the 43rd Marine Corps Marathon.

Up to 30,000 runners can participate in the marathon, and many more will gather to watch downtown and in Arlington, Virginia. The race kicks off 7:45 a.m. for wheelchair and hand cycle participants. Runners start at 7:55 a.m.

Due to expected long security lines, race organizers recommend showing up as early as possible.

Trains will start running at 6 a.m. The race course takes runners through the National Mall, East Potomac Park, Foggy Botton, Georgetown and Arlington, Virginia. Many roads will be closed in the area.

WMATA will also run extra Blue and Yellow line trains to accommodate crowds. Extra Blue Line trains run between Franconia-Springfield and Stadium-Armory from 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Additional Yellow Line trains run between Huntington and Mount Vernon Square from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.

The Pentagon Station is closest to the marathon start point, but WMATA recommends considering exiting at the Pentagon City to avoid crowds. If you’re participating in the 10K, you can take Metro to Archives and L’Enfant Plaza.

Arlington Cemetery station will close Sunday about 8:30 a.m.

Red Line trains will run every 22 minutes. Single-tracking will be in effect at Shady Grove and between Silver Spring and Wheaton.

Event organizers paid for the extra service, WMATA said.
