Metro to Ask for More Escalator Maintenance Workers

Metro to include escalator employees in new budget proposal

Metro is preparing its budget proposal and plans to ask for 10 additional employees to specifically work in its maintenance division.

The transit agency said it could actually use 55 more workers, which would cost almost $7 million.

Right now, more than 130 Metro escalators out of 588 are broken at Metro train platforms -- about one in five.

An independent consultant has said poor maintenance led to so many down escalators and elevators.

Metro’s Finance and Administration Committee is scheduled to meet Thursday.
