Metro Seeks Riders to Test New Technology

All aboard! Metro is actively searching for 3,000 riders to test their new fare payment technology.

Riders who actively commute between 10 specific metro rail stations and six bus routes are asked to partake in the 3-month pilot program beginning in January. Participants will use transit cards, contactless bank cards or electronic smartphone wallets to pay for their trip instead of the traditional fare card vending machines.

They’ll also be able to pay for parking with the same resources at the Shady Grove and Suitland stations.

Metro is utilizing its social media accounts to spark interest, and offers volunteers perks such as using specific test-only lanes during their commute and “bonus incentives.”

Recruitment launched just days after the WMATA announced its ridership dropped to 2005 levels.

If the test is deemed a success, Metro will replace the old fare gates and vending machines in 2017. To see if you qualify, check out the complete list of stations below or visit the WMATA’s website.
