Metro Launches New Alert System

Bus, rail passengers to get real time updates

Tuesday, Metro launched a new email and text messaging system designed to keep passengers in the know.

MetroAlerts will provide customers with up-to-the-minute information about service changes and disruptions, the transit agency said.

Bus riders will be able to receive information on up to four bus lines. The alerts can be sent to mobile devices, pagers or desktop email. It's the first time an alert system is available to bus riders.

The system will complement the Next Bus system, which provides predicted arrival times based on GPS data.

Rail riders can also get advisories for the four stations they use the most. The alerts for rail will be available in both short 140 character texts or longer, more detailed advisory emails.
