Metro fares are going up -- though not for a few riders.
Metro's board gave final approval Thursday to a new budget that includes fare hikes for MetroRail riders, for passengers who use SmarTrip cards on buses and for people who park at Metro lots, particularly in Prince George's County.
Here's how the fare increases break down:
MetroRail fares will increase 3 percent. Fares for riding a MetroBus and paying with a SmarTrip card will increase 15 cents.
Parking at all Metro lots will increase 10 cents -- plus an additional 50 cents at most Prince George's County stations. County officials had requested the change to bring prices in line with other Metro parking lots.
However, at the Addison Road, Landover and Prince George's Plaza parking lots, parking will increase only 10 cents.
Some fares will fall. The maximum fare for using the MetroAccess paratransit service will fall from $7 to $6.50, and the fare for riding a MetroBus and paying cash will fall from $1.80 to $1.75.
The fare changes will take effect July 1.
