Md. Woman Sentenced in Dumbbell Attack on Boy

A woman who pleaded guilty to trying to beat her ex-boyfriend's 8-year-old son to death with a dumbbell has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Helen Newsome, 28, of Hyattsville, was sentenced Friday in Prince George's County Circuit Court. She pleaded guilty to attempted murder in January.

Prosecutors said Newsome broke into her ex-boyfriend's Landover home on Aug. 30, 2013 and hid for more than 12 hours before the man left for work. Authorities said Newsome first tried to suffocate the sleeping boy with a pillow and then beat him with the dumbbell.

The boy told News4 he used karate moves to help escape the attack. He ran to a neighbor's house who called 911.
