Md. Official Calls for End to DUI Checkpoint Smartphone Apps

Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler is calling for Google and Apple to ban smartphone applications that provide the locations of drunken driving checkpoints.

Gansler, along with Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden, sent letters to Google Inc. and Apple Inc. asking them to ban the applications that can be downloaded on the Apple iPhone and phones using Google’s Android.

The maker of Blackberry phones has pulled a similar application.

Gansler said the applications hamper efforts to get drunken drivers off the road.
