Md. Nuclear Reactor Shuts Down After Failure

One of the Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plant's two reactors has shut down automatically after the unit's link to the regional power grid apparently failed, a spokesman said.

The reactor at the southern Maryland nuclear power plant shut down shortly before 2 p.m. Wednesday, according to spokesman David Fitz. He said the incident was under investigation and it was not known how long it would take to bring the unit back online.

Fitz said the reactor normally provides about 10 percent of the state's electricity.
