A Mechanicsville man has been charged with assault and reckless endangerment after barricading himself inside a shed in Hollywood early Saturday morning.

Joseph Leonard Anderson was charged with four counts of first-degree assault, four counts of second-degree assault, and reckless endangerment upon release from St. Mary's County Hospital, where he had been held overnight.

Authorities responded to the property on Mervell Dean Road at around 3 a.m. Saturday after receiving a report that Anderson was armed, on the property, and threatening to harm himself.

When deputies tried to contact Anderson, he responded by firing several shots, barricading himself in the shed and throwing some items at the officers. At one point during the standoff, Anderson emerged and fired several more shots in the general direction of sheriff's deputies.

Anderson finally surrendered at around 10:30 a.m. after negotiators were able to contact him. No injuries were reported.
