It started several weeks ago, according to police, when Wendell Brian Mansel approached a man in Leesburg, Va., for help with finding a contract killer.

The Leesburg resident in turn contacted police, who sent an undercover officer to pose as a hit man. The officer arranged a meeting with Mansel, who reportedly laid out his wishes to have his wife murdered.

Mansel is from Annapolis. Leesburg police said they coordinated with Anne Arundel County police to ensure the safety of Mansel’s wife once they learned of his plans.

Officers moved in to arrest Mansel on Friday, when he made another trip to Leesburg to meet with the undercover officer. He arrived with a gun and valuables, which he intended to use as partial payment for the hit, according to police.

Mansel is charged with attempted capital murder, murder-for-hire and soliciting murder-for-hire. He’s being held without bond.
