Md. Court Sticks up for Fortunetelling

Maryland's highest court has ruled fortunetelling is protected by free speech.

The Maryland Court of Appeals issued a ruling on Thursday reversing a Montgomery County court decision that supported an ordinance banning fortunetelling.

Judge Clayton Greene Jr., who wrote the court's opinion, concluded that while fortunetellers may sometimes deceive their customers, it's not up to the court to pass judgment on the validity or value of speech that fortunetelling entails.

Judge Glenn Harrell Jr. wrote a dissenting opinion. Harrell said the ordinance is limited in its application to fortunetelling for remuneration, instead of all fortunetelling.
