McAuliffe Names Retired Navy Officer to Cabinet

The retired commander of the U.S. Forces Fleet in Norfolk has been named to Gov.-elect Terry McAuliffe's Cabinet.

McAuliffe announced Friday that Adm. John Harvey Jr. will serve as secretary of veterans affairs and homeland security. The Democratic governor-elect has now named 10 of his 12 Cabinet members.

The 62-year-old Harvey received his commission from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1973 and served in a variety of positions during his 39-year career. He has a master's degree in public administration from Harvard University.

McAuliffe praised Harvey for his "unmatched leadership'' and his knowledge of both veterans affairs and emergency preparedness.
