Mayoral Candidates Say Federal Probe Is Hurting D.C.

Rivals to District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray say the city is suffering because of the federal investigation of the mayor's 2010 campaign.

Federal prosecutors said Monday that Gray was aware of an illegal, $668,000 "shadow campaign'' supporting his 2010 bid and that he personally requested a large chunk of the funds. Gray has not been charged.

During a debate Thursday night on NewsChannel 8, D.C. Councilmember Muriel Bowser said residents "are sad and they're mad'' and have lost faith in public officials. Councilmember Tommy Wells said Gray has been too distracted by the ongoing investigation to run the city well.

Councilmember Jack Evans said Gray deserves the presumption of innocence but that the investigation has left a cloud over the city.

The district's Democratic primary is April 1.
