FAIRFAX -- Virginia State Police are asking anyone who witnessed a fatal crash on Interstate 66 on Monday night for help.

The two-vehicle crash occurred at about 11 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of the highway near the Route 243, or Nutley Street, exit in Fairfax County.

A mattress was laying in the roadway on I-66 and a box truck swerved to avoid hitting it, police said. An SUV traveling behind the truck was not as lucky and hit the mattress, then ran off the side of the road and hit the truck. The vehicle then overturned before striking a guardrail, then coming to rest in a wooded area just off the hghway.

The 21-year-old driver of the vehicle was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the car. The woman, Kritika Singh, of Fairfax, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A male passenger, Vjjwal Joshi, of Fairfax, was wearing a seat belt and was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

The driver of the truck, Richard R. Moon, 58, of Herndon, Va., was not injured in the crash.

According to witnesses, a light-colored, older model conversion van was seen parked off to the side of the interstate near the crash scene at the time of the crash. State police would like to speak to the man driving this van as a possible witness.

Anyone else who may have witnessed the crash is asked to please contact Virginia State Police at 703-323-4522 or Area09@vsp.virginia.gov.

The crash remains under investigation.

  • htv Thursday, Nov 20 at 7:51 AM FLAG COMMENT How come no one reported that there was a mattress on laying on the high way? Next time, if you see anything laying on the road way, call 911 and report it right away. Public safety needs to notify DPW or Emergency management these agencies must act responsible and come out and pick up the mattress on the road. If someone have been reporting this matter, and if the Department of Public Work (DPW) has been notified, this accid ... MORE >
  • Buffy Wednesday, Nov 19 at 9:21 PM FLAG COMMENT These days, people are tampering with the cars engine parts to make the car go into a tailspin. Three days ago, some hispanic messed with a guys car in a gas station parking lot in Upper Marboro in which he poured kerosene into the motor oil resavoir so that when the person gets his car back, it would flair up and the guy would blame it on the station mechanic. The world is trashier than you think it is. Crime is getting mo ... MORE >
  • Saddened Wednesday, Nov 19 at 3:35 PM FLAG COMMENT My heart goes out to this girl's family; but maybe she should have been wearing a seat belt. She was only 21 years old and probably sitting too close to the steering wheel. I see this all the time on the highway. New and inexperienced drivers sitting 6 inches from the steeing wheel with no seat belt on; not paying attention to what's happening around them; only focused on the car in front. Now, yes I'm speculating! But, y ... MORE >
