Two mail-processing facilities in Maryland slated for quick shutdown by the US Postal Service are getting a temporary reprieve.
Facilities in Gaithersburg and Waldorf, Maryland were listed among the 252 mail processing centers on the chopping block. Now, the Postal Service says it is delaying the nationwide closings and consolidations until May 15 after requests from multiple senators.
Public input meetings are among the steps under consideration in further review of the facilities.
The plant closures -- initially anticipated to begin in April -- were expected to result in the elimination of approximately 28,000 jobs nationwide. That was expected to translate into slower delivery for the cash-strapped service.
The Postal Service is looking to cut its operating expenses by $20 billion in 2015 in order to return to profitability.
