Maryland Unveils New Driver's Licenses, ID Cards

The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration has announced a $3.5 million redesign of its driver's license and identification cards.

The cards were unveiled Monday and feature new security measures designed to prevent identity theft and fraud.

Some of the new features include a new polycarbonate card body, laser engraving, changeable laser images, tactile text and inventory control numbers for verification purposes.

Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Rahn calls the cards the most secure driver's license in the country. He says the cards will prevent forgery for many years.

The cards will be made available beginning June 20. All cards issued after July 11 will feature the new design. They will be printed and mailed from a high-security Motor Vehicle Administration facility.
