Maryland Man Sentenced to Year in Prison for Selling Bath Salts

A Baltimore man will spend one year in prison for supplying synthetic drugs known as bath salts to a dealer in central Virginia.

Carlo Ernesto D'Addario, 43, was sentenced on Wednesday in federal court in Harrisonburg.

D'Addario pleaded guilty to one drug charge related to the case. Prosecutors say he brought bath salts from Baltimore to Augusta County, where he sold them to a dealer.

Bath salts are crystalized chemicals that are snorted, swallowed or smoked. They can cause psychotic episodes, seizures and hallucination.

U.S. Attorney Timothy Heaphy called the drugs "volatile and dangerous" and said they attributed to violent outbursts and emergency room visits. Many states and the federal government have banned their use.
