Maryland Man Charged With Murder of Girlfriend's Toddler

A Maryland man has been arrested in the death of his girlfriend's toddler.

Police say the little boy, 23-month-old Anthony Winfrey, died of blunt force injuries after Joshua Riley, 29, had been watching him.

Riley was in a romantic relationship with the boy's mother, and they lived together in an apartment in Lanham, Prince George's County Police said.

Riley was watching the boy April 9 when Winfrey's mother got home from work and found him unresponsive, police said. He died six days later.

"It's incomprehensible," Winfrey's grandfather, John Winfrey, told News4's Pat Collins. "He was our grandson, that's a very deep part of our life."

Riley was arrested Wednesday and charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, child abuse and other related charges. He is being held without bond.
