Maryland Governor Escapes Burning Bar

Fire cuts celebration short

Talk about the toast of the town! Well, some Maryland lawmakers almost were.

Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley and nearly 50 state legislators evacuated an Annapolis bar Thursday night after smelling smoke.

The group celebrated the end of the first term for freshman lawmakers at O’Brien’s on Main Street.  Around 11:15 p.m., a member of the governor’s security team smelled smoke and then escorted O’Malley out of the three-story building. The party also followed them out.

As they were leaving, firefighters were hooking up hoses and entering the building.

House Speaker Michael E. Busch, House Minority Leader Anthony J. O’Donnell and Senate Majority Leader Allan H. Kittleman were also at the event.
