    Police Name Suspect in Death of Woman Who Was Shot Before Crash

    Police have named a suspect in the death of a a woman who suffered a gunshot wound before crashing into an apartment building in District Heights, Maryland.

    Marquita Wimms, 32, from Temple Hills, died late on Oct. 3. Her car had hit the apartment building hard enough that 27 residents had to be evacuated due to structural damage. However, emergency workers caring for her discovered that before the crash Wimms had been shot.

    Wimms died at a trauma center. Her death has been ruled a homicide.

    Now, police say they have a suspect: Joseph Poteat, 29, of the 1900 block of Rochelle Avenue in District Heights. He lives in the building where Wimms crashed, a police press release indicated.

    Poteat is charged with first- and second-degree murder and related charges.

    Detectives are working to discover a motive in the case, police said.

    "She's a great person -- a wonderful person," said Douglas Peeples, who said he was a longtime friend of the victim.
