A marine nominated for the silver star is hospitalized after being beaten with a club in Crystal City. Derrick Ward has this exclusive report.

A Marine recommended for the Silver Star is in the hospital after a traumatic beating in Crystal City.

Police say a man beat Lance Corporal Jake Aaron Hill with a blunt object in the early morning hours of January 27.  Hill is a veteran of the war in Afghanistan who lost his leg to an IED in 2010.

Police say the attack happened at the 7- Eleven Store on the 400 block of 23rd Street, across the street from the Crystal City Restaurant.

There is surveillance video showing the Marine talking with a woman named Anita Cook outside the convenience store that night, according to sources.

Sources also say Hill made some sort of racial comment towards Cook that may have precipitated the attack. Cook's friend, Marqui Dawkins, allegedly went to his vehicle and retrieved the club that was used in the attack.

Police said both Cook and Dawkins have been arrested in the incident, charged with malicious wounding.

Hill remains hospitalized with a serious head injury.
