Manhole Explosion Knocks Out Power Near Dupont Circle: DC Fire

A manhole explosion caused a rude awakening for a lot of people early Wednesday in the Dupont Circle neighborhood, D.C. Fire says.

Firefighters got a call for a possible explosion. They didn't find any fire, but it appears a manhole exploded a little before 5 a.m.

A building near 17th and P Streets NW was evacuated as a precaution.

Pepco confirmed they are investigating an equipment issue on O Street NW.

Pepco's outage map showed hundreds of customers were without power for a time. The utility expects to put the lights back on by 9 a.m.
